Spot The Track: Lyrics Quiz

The post that generated the most comments recently was You hum it... I'll play it! - a guess the intro quiz. I thought therefore that I'd have a go at another quiz post to see what happens. My idea was to put my iPod on shuffle and give you the opening lines of the first five tracks it played. You could then spot the track and the artist for a much coveted Music Musings no-prize. However, this didn't work for a couple of reasons. First, some of the tracks were instrumentals, and second, two of the non-instrumental tracks were so obscure that even I wouldn't get them - and it's my iPod!

Lyrics
Here then are five tracks for you to guess. Not the first five from a random play but five from artist who appeared in the first ten shuffled tracks my iPod played... and, more importantly, tracks I hope you can guess!

Points will be awarded for identifying the track and for the artist. Bonus points will be awarded if I feel like it. :-)

Update: occurred to me people might still like to play even though people have already got the answers, so I have hidden the answers. If you want to check your guess, highlight the space and hopefully all will be revealed. :-)
  1. Say you stand by your man
    Tell me something I don't understand
    You said you love me and that's a fact
    Then you left me, said you felt trapped.
    Artist: The Clash {Guessed by Jeff} Title: Train in Vain {Guessed by Jeff}
    Bonus point for naming the cover artists I listened to.
    Cover artist: Annie Lennox. {Guessed by Katie}

  2. You know that it would be untrue
    You know that I would be a liar
    If I was to say to you
    Girl, we couldn't get much higher.
    Artist: The Doors {Guessed by Anne-Marie} Title: Light My Fire {Guessed by Jeff}

  3. It's one o'clock and time for lunch,dum dee dummmm dee dum.
    When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench
    I can always hear them talk.
    Artist: Genesis {Half-guessed by Jaye} Title: I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) {Half-guessed by Jaye}
    Bonus points available.
    Name the Genesis album this track comes from.

  4. The distant echo -
    Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
    To take them home to
    The ones that they love and who love them forever.
    Artist:
    The Jam
    {Guessed by Jaye} Title: Down In The Tube Station At Midnight {Guessed by Jaye}
    Bonus points available.
    Guess which are my favourite lines from this track. :-)

  5. I am the son
    and the heir
    Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
    I am the son and heir
    Of nothing in particular.
    Artist: The Smiths {Guessed by Aileen} Title: How Soon Is Now {Guessed by Katie}
    Bonus points available.
    1) what 1990 single sampled the opening section?
    2) who did the cover version that was used as the theme song for... Love Spit Love {
    Guessed by Katie}
    3) which US TV show?
    Charmed {Guessed by Katie}
Of course, you could just Google them... but where's the fun in that?

Questions
Is five enough? Do you need hints? Or, is it too easy? Do you want some harder ones?

Update
I've edited in the answers so far. Current points chart is:

Katie: 4
Jaye: 3
Jeff: 3
Anne-Marie: 1
Aileen: 1

1. The Clash - "Train in Vain"

2. The Doors - "Light My Fire"

Those are the only ones I recognize.

Hello Anne-Marie

That's one point for the title. ANd thank you for playing!

Hello Jeff

I'll give you two points one for the artist from lyric 2) (Anne-Marie already got the title!) and one for the artist for lyric 1). It is a Clash song, so I'll give you a point for that too but I actually listened to a cover version, so I'll give a bonus point to the first person to name the artist I listened to. :-)

I haven't heard any covers of "Train in Vain", but after looking at the song's Wikipedia article, and from what I think I know of your musical taste, I'm going to guess The Black Crowes. :)

Knew the Doors too. And the last one is the Smiths. Can't remember whether the title is "Just like everbody else does" or "I am human and I need to be loved" - but it's that one anyway.

Hello again Jeff

The Black Crowes was a good guess - I almost used one of their tracks in this quiz - but it's not them. The cover artist is more at the edges of my taste. :-)

Hello Neo

You look like spam. Since you don't seem to be selling anything, I was tempted to leave you alone... but you are off topic, so I decided to remove you. Sorry.

Hello Aileen

Welcome back. It looks like a quiz is the only thing that will get you to talk to me. :-) You are right with The Smiths so that's one point so far but not even close with the title.

The Smiths song is 'How Soon isNow?' - my favourite :-)

Just realised everyone is commenting their answers. Left mine on twitter!

I think 4 in The Jam and Number 1 was covered by The Manics.

Hello Katie

How soon is now gets you a point. :-) One of my all time favourite openings to a track - with Mr Marr making some very odd noises with his guitar. Three bonus points available: 1) what 1990 single sampled the opening section? 2) who did the cover version that was used as the theme song for 3) which US TV show?

David said...

And another point for Katie identifying Annie Lennox as the cover version that I listened to on my iPod. She has a stunningly good voice. Saw her in concert with the Eurythmics in 1980-something and, although they are mostly remembered as a synth-pop duo, Dave Stewart is a stunningly good guitarist!

Hello Jaye

You get two points although it was nearly three! You get two half points - see below half!

One for Down in the Tube Station at Midnight. Bonus point if you can guess which are my favourite lines from this track - one of my all time favourite lyrics.

You get a half for I Know What I Like. For a full point, you should have said I Know What I Like [open brackets]In Your Wardrobe[close brackets]. :-)

Also half points for fudging the artist. Clearly a Gabriel lyric and vocal but it is definitely a Genesis song.

Bonus points available for naming the album it comes from. (Hint: It is not Nursery Cryme!)

David said...

Sorry Jaye

You get another point for identifying The Jam.

See... firm but fair. :-)

Hello Cassie

I've not heard the Manics cover... I'll need to look for it. I wonder if it is on Spotify?

Yeah it is!

Hi David,

I don't know the 90s single that sampled how soon is now, but the TV show is Charmed, with a version by Love Spit Love (it's on my iPod too!). I'm slightly ashamed to add that I used to be a big fan of Charmed - good, silly fun!

David said...

And another point for Katie. It was indeed Charmed!

David said...

Sorry, make that two points for Katie because she got the artist too.
