When musical worlds collide #3
I thought it was a one off... then I found some more... and here we are with the third When musical worlds collide. Do you enjoy these odd pairings as much as I do? Would you like to see more?
Collision 1: I'll start with the one I'm least sure about. I love the video but I'm not sure it counts as a collision as I'll explain below:
My memory of Gary Numan is of a early pioneer of Synth Pop whereas Nine Inch Nails are the founding fathers of Industrial Rock. Surely no connection there - a clear collision. But when you watch the video - it works. What do you think? musical collision or is there is a clear line from Numan to NIN?
Collision 2: I'm not convinced that the embed code for this next video is right. However, you should be able to see it in the original ill doctrine post. If it doesn't work here, check it out there... as long as you promise to come back here afterwards. :-)
Update: I really like this video but I can't get it to load reliably either here or on the ill doctrine site (which is a pity). I've edited the embedded video out because the page just hangs when it fails to load. :-(
I think this Blues/Rap mashup works well. John Lee Hooker and 50 cent - two very different artists and two different attitudes to money but one interesting musical mashup.
Collision 3: Next up is a musical duo that featured in Free Download Friday #33: - Rodrigo Y Gabriela:
Listening to the free download of Orion, it was clear that they were very good but watching them perform with Robert Trujillo is just stunning.
Collision 4: Finally, something that's more than a little bizarre. When I hear the term One Man Band, I picture a chap playing a guitar, with a bass drum on his back, cymbals between his knees and a kazoo on a bit of wire round his neck... that doesn't come close to describing this chap:
The drumming is good - that he's doing it one handed is brilliant! If you had only heard the track without seeing him perform, would you have guessed that he was doing it live and all by himself?
I can't quite remember who directed me to these videos but feel free to claim the credit in a comment. I can't see that I'll have another of these posts in the near future but if you want to make some suggestions...

Free Download Friday #23: Mark Vidler
What does the word Mashup mean to you? The first time I encountered it was in relation to a mashup of different parts of Web 2.0 technology to create something greater than the whole of its parts. For example putting a Google Map with pictures from Flickr into a blog post about your walk along the West Highland Way. I heard mashup used as a musical term later but associated it more with dance music than with rock.
However, some time ago, I read in Classic Rock Magazine about a chap called Mark Vidler who does mashups with rock tunes. In particular Classic Rock described a mashup involving AC/DC and Queen. If you are anything like me, you are probably screaming in horror at the thought and imagining a mutant child produced from the meeting of Jive Bunny and Kid Rock. Unbelievably though, it is actually very good.
There is a problem though. I started the Free Download Friday feature to highlight links to free, legal, music downloads but the legal status of most mashups is at best... doubtful.
My problem is, I was planning to do the Radiohead free download of These Are My Twisted Words but it since loads of people have already posted that, I decided I need a last minute replacement... all I could think of was the slightly dodgy mashup from Mark Vidler.
However, when I went to his site, I discovered he had produced an album of original material which he was giving away free. The album is called The Future, The Past & The Present Tension and is an interesting mix of styles and influences. Bits of Oasis, a touch of Tom Waits, some XTC and, somewhat bizarrely, a large helping of Ivor Cutler. So, that's my Free Download link for today.
Check it out and let me know what you think. And of course, I strongly advise that you don't scroll down a bit and look for the Rock In Black mashup of AC/DC and Queen because that might not be entirely legal.

Where's the YouTube Rock Band?
I wrote in my Education blog about the YouTube Orchestra. I think this is a great idea and wondered if anyone has ever done anything similar with a Blues or Rock band?
I'd heard of eJamming AUDiiO which apparently lets musicians collaborate in real time over the Internet. However, recording video separately and then mashing it together to create a group video would seem to be a low tech alternative. Clearly, there are timing and tuning issues, not to mention video editing problems, but with a bit of good will and effort from all involved it should be possible. Certainly, this chap has managed to do it:
Are there examples of amateur musicians cooperating to create music together in YouTube or elsewhere?
